Double Duty Beauty

Double Duty Beauty

Today I’m talking about a brand most of us are familiar with, but products that have not been super popular. That brand is Tarte, and the products are from their Double Duty Beauty line.

Tarte is a great cosmetic brand that makes amazing makeup products. They are formulated without mineral oil, parabens, phthalates, triclosan, sodium lauryl sulfate, and gluten. They add ingredients that nourish the skin like vitamin E, amazonian clay and mineral pigments. They are cruelty free as well, so you never need to worry about their products testing on little bunny wabbits.

In early 2016 Tarte launched two huge product lines. Rainforest of the Sea was launched exclusively for Sephora and has been super popular. I mean over 49,000 videos show up on Youtube when you type the words “Rainforest of the Sea Foundation.” I’ve seen endless makeup tutorials and beauty gurus that are in love with this product. With the inclusion of algae extracts, antioxidants that boost the skin’s hydration and the exclusion of nasty ingredients, no wonder everyone loves this product.

The Double Duty Beauty line was the second major launch and this was exclusively for Ulta stores. While their Shape Tape which is exclusively for Ulta has been a major success, the Double Duty Beauty didn’t get reactions like the Rainforest of the Sea Collection. Each product in this collection is meant to have more than one use. I have tried three products from the line and I have mixed feelings about them myself. I personally haven’t tried any products from the Rainforest of the Sea collection yet so I won’t be able to compare the two, but I hope to in the near future. Here’s the down-low on the products I’ve tried.

Double Duty Beauty Empowered Hybrid Gel Foundation – $39

DDBfoundationbox.png

Well that is sure a mouth full for a product name, don’t ya think? It is a gel foundation that comes in 17 different shades. I chose the light-medium beige, I bought it in the winter time so my complexion was a bit lighter then. I must admit choosing my shade was a little difficult, I didn’t know if I was the light medium beige, sand, or honey all have different undertones. I think the one I picked had too much of a pink undertone, but the girl at Ulta said it was a good match so I listened to her at the time.

The hybrid gel foundation is said to be poreless, and full coverage. “The unique, oil-free blend of smoothing, plumping and pore refining ingredients help brighten skin while moisturizing and blurring the look of fine lines and pores. The cooling, hypoallergenic gel feels like a drink of water for your skin, while masking any redness, dark spots, acne and uneven skin tone for 12-hour wear across skin types,” Tarte claims on their website.

The foundation seems like a medium/full coverage. I have noticed on my skin that you really need to wear a primer underneath, if your not wearing a primer you don’t get that flawless finish and your pores can be noticeable. A little bit of this product goes A LONG WAY. You will be surprised how little product you actually need to cover your whole face. Because of that you will get a lot of use and it will last a long time, a bonus when your spending $39 for 1.0 Fl. Oz.

There is a brush that is part of this line, the Double Duty Beauty Foundation Brush & Spatula – $30. It is an angled kabuki foundation brush on one side, with a spatula on the other. It is meant to scoop out the hybrid gel foundation, so you don’t spread bacteria by using your fingers.

Honestly, if you have a flat foundation brush you don’t need to buy this brush. My IT cosmetics foundation brush is just fine, but it is nice to have a separate brush for my regular foundations and one for this “gel foundation.” If you already own a makeup spatula, then you’re really set and this product is necessary. I didn’t have a spatula so I bought the brush.

I have tried using this foundation with both a brush and a beauty blender. The brush is the best way to apply it. The brush evenly distributes the product all over your skin and gets into all the contours of your face just so. However, I do feel that it looks better when I go over it with a damp beauty blender. The damp beauty blender really picks up that extra product the brush leaves on your skin, and blends out certain areas of the face (like the nose) better than a brush can. So with this foundation my recommendation is to use both.

There is one big downside to this foundation, it’s a fucking mess. Sorry Tarte, but I’m being 100% honest. The pot like container it comes in has this little plastic lid on top and the lid will have more foundation on it than inside the pot when you pull it off. When the heavier lid is screwed back on, the excess foundation from the smaller plastic lid gets all over the rim, hence all over your fingers. What you get left with is a foundation fingerprinted messy jar. If your lucky nothing with get on you, and if your really lucky nothing will get on your furniture. This is not the type of foundation you can throw in your bag and just use on the go, keep it in your vanity where it won’t toss or turn. Unfortunately I do all of my makeup at work and its annoying to know if I want to use this foundation it’s going to be a disaster.

On the upside, it does work! It does last the 12 hours Tarte claims, I can wear it all night at work, even when I’m sweating my makeup will still look great. If I had to give it a rating from a 1-10 I would give it a 6.5, the majority of the points loss because of the disaster it creates.

If I had to give the brush a rating, I would give it a 5. The brush is $30, which is expensive for a brush. The hairs don’t shed; it is a good quality brush. The shape of it and the length of the brush is a little awkward because of the attached spatula. The main point of buying the brush though is to make the foundation less of a mess, and it really helps very little. Tarte meant for all the items in this line to have a double use, and the second use this brush is meant to have is kind of useless.

Double Duty Beauty Creamy Powder Foundation – $35

Ulta had a 21 days of beauty sale, and one day they had the Double Duty Beauty Confidence Creamy Powder Foundation on sale. Correct me if I am wrong but I think I only paid $20 vs. the regular price of $35. If it wasn’t on sale, I would have never bought this item as I do not like powder foundations whatsoever.

I have the Two Faced Cocoa Contour Kit, and I love the light cocoa shade for under my eyes. It is my favorite under eye powder. I hit pan on that color, and Two Faced does not sell the light cocoa powder separately. I tried a foundation powder from Two Faced; someone at Ulta told me was similar but I did not like it and the colors were not the same. Ever since I was on the hunt for a powder to use to set my under-eye contour. I just really did not want to buy a new Cocoa Contour Kit when I was only done with 1 color, and the other three were basically full. So 21 Days of beauty was going on, I grabbed a Cocoa Contour off the shelves, compared the Double Duty Beauty colors and came up with fair-light neutral.

The powder foundation comes in a nice, hard, shiny gold case with a mirror. It comes inside the cutest little pouch that says “make today beautiful,” and has a flat sponge included for $35 (unless it’s 21 Days of Beauty, lol.)

The foundation is exactly as described, “CREAMY” powder foundation. It’s definitely a powder not a liquid, but when you swirl your brush around you don’t get a lot of powdery fallout. It is very creamy.

Tarte claims “Our creamy, hypoallergenic foundation formula masks any redness, dark spots, uneven skin tone and excess oil, while softening the look of fine lines and pores. It can be worn wet or dry for your perfect level of coverage and works across skin types for 12-hour wear that’s never dry or flaky.”

I use it to set my under-eye concealer and areas of my nose and forehead where my foundation will sometime flake. Ever since I started using this I have not had an issue flaking on my forehead, and my under-eye area is set all night. It also does not make my skin dry, or FEEL DRY, the reason I hate powder foundations. I don’t even like most loose setting powders because they just make my skin feel so dry and gross. I pretty much like to have dewy feeling skin instead of super matte, locked-in makeup. I want my skin to breathe, and look great at the same time.

If you like super matte powder foundation, the Confidence Creamy Powder Foundation may not be for you. I don’t have very bad skin, but the coverage doesn’t seem like it’s a full coverage, but I am not a good person to attest to that. The product does say it is build-able so I bet you can build the coverage up nicely. However if you do want a little bit of extra coverage on top of your liquid foundation, (or Tarte’s Gel Foundation) it’s great for that. It is perfect for setting your liquid foundation, but it is not what you would use to “bake.” It gives you more of a glowy look vs. a super matte look, that is the best way I can describe it.

My Youtube Channel is coming soon, but I saw a good video that showed what the foundation could do on it’s own and what it looks like over a liquid foundation. She had very similar results to me.

Amazonian Clay Full Coverage Foundation vs. DDB Hybrid Gel Foundation

The last product I am going to mention is the Tarte Amazonian Clay Foundation. It has been around for a while and is a favorite of many beauty bloggers because of its full coverage. The Amazonian Clay Foundation has a totally different texture than the Hybrid Gel Foundation. The Amazonian Clay is super thick and is a true full coverage; while the Gel Foundation isn’t as thick and is a medium-full coverage. On my skin they both give me very similar coverage, I would consider them both full. Again I don’t have really bad skin with acne or scars to cover up, so our opinions on coverage might differ. They also both last 12 hours.

The Amazonian Clay requires you use much more product than the Hybrid Gel Foundation. I always need a decent squeeze and sometimes a second to fully cover my face, whether I use a brush to apply it or a damp beauty blender. The Hybrid Gel Foundation on the other hand requires such a little bit of product, it’s insane. Just a little bit goes a long way. The first time I used it, I grabbed my usual amount and it was way too much.

The Double Duty Beauty Empowered Gel Foundation has a lot of ingredients that hydrate and moisturize the skin. It feels like my skin is drinking beauty juice every time I apply it, and that moist feeling will stay with me throughout the day. The Amazonian Clay foundation doesn’t give you that hydrated feel. It gives you a much drier matte look and feel, while the gel foundation feels more dewy.

Lastly the Amazonian Clay foundation comes in a much better vessel. It is the type of foundation you can throw in your bag and use on the go. The Hybrid Gel Foundation is a the complete opposite, it is messy and heavy, not on-the-go friendly. If I had to rate the Amazonian Clay foundation on a scale of 1-10, I would give it a 7. It is really disappointing because I do like the Hybrid Gel Foundation overall better than the Amazonian Clay. I like the coverage it gives me, while using less product. I just hate the mess that comes with it.
