Well Done Weleda!

Well Done Weleda!

Although Weleda has been around since 1921, I have just discovered the brand. This is the first time I am trying one of their products, and so far so good. Before I even get into the product itself, let me talk about the company.

I wanted to do a little research before writing this review, as I knew absolutely nothing about Weleda. I went onto the Weleda Website and was very impressed after reading the “Our Story” page.

A man named Dr. Rudolf Steiner started the company in Switzerland in 1921. The company has amazing values they believe in, and have set strict standards for their products. They believe that plants and nature helps balance us, keeping us in good health as well as beautiful. Weleda has seven astounding principles they run their company by. Fair treatment of consumers, partners, and farmers, integrity and quality, sustainability, and ethical business practices are a few. Imagine if all companies ran their businesses like this? The world would be a much different place.

Weleda is exceptionally environmentally conscious. Everything from sourcing, to their products, and packaging are sustainable and environmentally friendly. Their products are manufactured from sustainable materials, and the packaging is completely recyclable once finished. All of Weleda’s personal care products are certified by NATRUE, created by the International Natural and Organic Cosmetics Association. You will be able to find out everything about the product you are purchasing, the ingredients in it, where they come from, and their safety. Plus all of their products are cruelty-free, so you never need to worry about them being tested on animals.

In accordance with NATRUE, which is Europe’s leading Natural Certifier all of Weleda’s products are

  • Cruelty-Free
  • Paraben-Free
  • Chemical Preservatives-Free
  • Preservative-Free
  • SLS-Free
  • Synthetic Fragrance-Free
  • Phthalate-Free
  • GMO-Free

They have their own gardens as well that they source some of their ingredients from. Weleda’s gardens are completely free of pesticides and chemicals, and use safe farming methods.

A company like Weleda is the perfect example of the type of company society should be supporting. Why should we be promoting companies that harm the environment, have huge carbon footprints, pollute the Earth,  and look at their consumers as no more than dollar signs? Or produce shitty products and then false advertise, a company like that should not earn anyone’s business. But hey, that’s just my opinion.

Shall we get to the product?

Whole Foods had a large selection of Weleda products and I really didn’t know what I wanted to try first. I opted for a face cream, but their were SO MANY OPTIONS. Day creams, night creams, eye creams, hydrating, renewing, age defying, age revitalizing, there was a lot to chose from.

I was attracted to their “Renewing” products because of the inclusion of Wild Rose and Peach Kernal Oil. I am rose obsessed so this line was right up my alley. I believe they had 4 different types of face lotions that were part of this product line; I opted to try the Day Cream. Day cream is great to prep your skin with before putting on makeup, and is usually not as thick as a night cream. I knew it would be the choice I would use the most and could really put to the test.

Weleda Renewing Day Cream- $28.50

The Weleda Renewing Day Cream is said to soften first lines and smoothes the skin. It is made for normal to dry skin. According to Weleda.com,

A rich day cream to help make skin feel smooth

Harness the velvet smoothness of rose petals for the look of vitality for your skin. For nourished, beautiful radiance, every day.

Apply it every morning to the face and neck after cleansing and toning. It is highly suitable for use under make-up, just let it sink into the skin for a minute prior to foundation.

There are two types of Rose oils in this product. Wild musk rose seed oil, which makes your skin feel restored and damask rose oil that adds a beautiful fragrance. Both have soothing properties to the skin.

The packaging the cream comes in is not a bottle, it’s more of a foil tube. I guess that’s what you would call it? But it is completely recyclable! The screw top is at the bottom of the tube, so be sure not to squeeze too hard as you will get WAY TOO MUCH product. Just a little bit of the cream goes a long way, a small dab is enough for the entire face and neck. It has 1 FL OZ of product inside the tube, so it is a fairly small amount, but again just a little goes a long way.

Of course it smells like roses, but it is not too perfumed. I love the scent of rose; to me it is the perfect balance, not “barely scented” but not too strong or “perfumey.”  The product is not thick, but its not too light. It is the perfect texture for a day cream. When you put this on your face, you immediately feel completely hydrated. It doesn’t feel greasy or oily, just hydrating. Within a minute of putting it on my face I feel like I’m glowing and radiant, and my skin is being restored.

The price was a little bit lower at Whole Foods than on the Weleda website, I paid $26.99 for mine so it was about $1.50 less. It is on the small side, you only get 1 FL OZ of product. All of my other day creams around this price point come in 1.7 FL OZ or 2 FL OZ bottles, so the renewing day cream is substantially less. I own the Neutrogena Oil Free Acne Moisturizer that is about $12, and is 4 FL OZ. Despite the price I believe the Weleda Renewing Day Cream as well as their other products are worth it. The ingredients are way better, you cannot compare them to a brand like Neutrogena. Extreme care goes into the production and the products have strict quality standards, that definitely has a large factor in pricing. Because the ingredients are great and the company itself is great, I know exactly what I am getting and where the ingredients are coming from, it didn’t bother me that the amount of product was on the smaller size. Plus a little bit really does go a long way, I need to use less of this one than any other one of my face lotions. I would say this face lotion is a mid price point. It’s not super cheap, but it is not very expensive either. There are a lot of high end brands out there that will charge you over $100 a bottle for ingredients that are not as good as Weleda’s. If you have the money to buy a $100 face cream, pause for a second and pick something out from Weleda’s lines. If spending almost $30 for a face cream is pricey for you, keep in mind that it will last you a good while. Don’t forget that Whole Foods not only has samples out at the store for you to try, but if you are not satisfied with the product, you can return it, even after it was opened and used. You will have the comfort to know that after spending $30, you will get a full refund if you don’t love it. Yet another reason Weleda is giving high end skincare brands a run for their money.

Weleda’s store on amazon has a great price for this product, currently $17.01. That is like $10 less than what I paid. Weleda Renewing Facial Lotion , 1-Fluid Ounce, you can click on the link or the image to the left to be redirected to Amazon.

I really did love this product and would highly recommend it to anyone. I am not affiliated with Weleda in any way, but after reading all about their company, I would love to be. If rose isn’t for you, or you have a more oily skin type, they have plenty of products to choose from. I will definitely be trying more items from their line in the future and reporting back with my opinions.

I bought another face lotion from Whole Foods, from a different brand the same day as I bought this and I do not like it at all. Rose oil was also a key ingredient in this other face lotion, but it did not compare to Weleda’s product. I will be writing about that one soon and why I didn’t like it. I will probably reference back to this review and compare the two.
